Local Doctor Leads Effort to Bring Life-Saving Ultrasound to First Responders

AUA Class of 2023 alumnus, Dr. Philip Stone, MD, MBA, an Emergency Medicine Resident, is at the forefront of a program training first responders to use ultrasound for cardiac arrest situations. This initiative, funded by a government grant, teaches paramedics, firefighters, and nurses how to perform cardiac ultrasound (ECHO) evaluations in the field.

This innovative program is one of the few in the country, aiming to make this training the new standard of care. Participants learn to assess heart activity via ultrasound, directly impacting ACLS protocol management. “Visualizing cardiac activity in real-time can significantly improve our response to cardiac arrest,” says Dr. Stone.

The program’s organizers believe this technology will lead to better patient outcomes by enabling faster, more informed treatment decisions. Dr. Stone’s work highlights the potential for advancements in pre-hospital medicine and promises to reshape emergency response. His work is just one example of how AUA grads give back to the community.
